Stem Cells Reversing Aging in Mice: Are Humans Next?

Scientists are using stem cells to reverse aging in mice, and they say your research may one day translate to individuals.
MSNBC. com reports a study published on Tuesday showed the injection of stem cells reversed ageing in mice.

In the research, mice were engineered to imitate an ailment in humans called progeria which speeds up growing old. Mice with progeria typically die at around 21 days old, whereas normal mice die at 24 months old. The mice were injected within the stomach with young muscle come cells from healthy mice.

Researchers noticed an instant difference in the behavior on the mice.
Although the stem-cell injected mice with progeria didn’t live provided that the average mouse, they lived three times provided that they would have without the particular stem cells.
The co-author on the study, Johnny Huard, is the professor of orthopedic surgery in the University of Pittsburgh School regarding Medicine and he believes the mice would've lived longer had he injected the therapy again.

Scientists believe the aging procedure occurs when stem cells age and lose the ability to repair themselves. The cells after that divide slowly.
“It was head boggling, ” said Huard to be able to MSNBC. com. “When I discovered them I thought, ‘Oh our God, I must have made an oversight and put the normal mice within the wrong cage. ’ But we were holding indeed the mice we’d injected with the stem cells. ”
“There’s a lot of money being spent in the world looking to delay aging, ” said the particular professor. “It would be fantastic if we can apply this to human creatures. It’s a very simple technique. ”

In 2010, The Guardian reported that researchers in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School regenerated aged mice simply by reactivating the enzyme telomerase, which serves as being a ‘protective cap’ on chromosomes.
Each time a cell divides, telomerase becomes reduced, until they stop working entirely and the cell dies or enters circumstances of suspension. This course of action is behind most of what occurs during growing old.
